The paper studies comodules over a basic indecomposable hereditary coalgebra \(C\) over a field by means of its left valued Gabriel quiver, an associated Tits quadratic form and locally nilpotent representations of Ext-species of \(C\). In particular, a detailed characterization of the case when every left \(C\)-comodule decomposes as a direct sum of finite-dimensional subcomodules is formulated. The interplay with semiperfect coalgebras and serial coalgebras is also studied. All results are quite precise and no assumptions on the ground field are made.
