The paper studies the asymptotically exact a posteriori error analysis for the semi-discrete discontinuous Galerkin method for two-dimensional linear hyperbolic conservation laws on Cartesian meshes. The theoretical results are valid for both periodic and Dirichlet boundary conditions. The key ingredient in the proof is a superconvergence result in [\textit{W. Cao} et al., SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 53, No. 4, 1651--1671 (2015; Zbl 1328.65195)]. Numerical results are reported.
