Let \(\Omega\) be a proper sub-domain of the complex plane \(\mathbb{C}\) and let \(\zeta\in\Omega\). For \(f\in H(\Omega),\) we denote by \(S_N(f,\zeta)(z)\) the sequence of partial sums of the Taylor development of \(f\) with center \(\zeta\). The paper deals with the set \(\mathcal{U}(\Omega,\zeta)\) of universal functions \(f\in H(\Omega)\) such that for every compact set \(K\subset\mathbb{C}\setminus\Omega\) with connected complement, and every function \(h: K\to\mathbb{C}\) continuous on \(K\) and holomorphic on \(K^\circ\), there exists a strictly increasing sequence \(\lambda_n\in\{0,1,2,\dots\}\) such that \(\sup_{z\in K}|S_{\lambda_n}(f,\zeta)(z)-h(z)|\to 0\) as \(n\to+\infty.\) The existence of such functions is now well known when \(\Omega\) is simply connected [\textit{V. Nestoridis}, Ser. Approx. Decompos. 11, 421--430 (1999; Zbl 0942.30003)]. Moreover in this case we know that such functions do not depend on the center of expansion \(\zeta\) and are unbounded [\textit{A. Melas} and \textit{V. Nestoridis}, Adv. Math. 157, No. 2, 138--176 (2001; Zbl 0985.30023); \textit{J. Müller} et al., Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 38, No. 4, 597--606 (2006; Zbl 1099.30001); \textit{S. J. Gardiner}, Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 45, No. 1, 191--199 (2013; Zbl 1272.30081)]. In the paper under review, the authors are interested in the case of multiply connected domains \(\Omega\). Recent results show that such universal functions can exist (for instance whenever \(\Omega^c\) is a connected compact set [\textit{A. D. Melas}, Ann. Inst. Fourier 51, No. 6, 1539--1551 (2001; Zbl 0989.30003)]). Using advanced tools of potential theory, the authors prove that for any domain \(\Omega\subsetneq\mathbb{C}\) and any point \(\zeta\in \Omega,\) every function \(f\) in \(\mathcal{U}(\Omega,\zeta)\) is unbounded. In the same spirit, the authors study the dependence on \(\zeta\) of the collection \(\mathcal{U}(\Omega,\zeta)\) in the doubly connected case. They obtain that \(\mathcal{U}(\Omega,\zeta)\) can depend on the choice of \(\zeta\) as in the triply connected case. Finally they adapt their proofs to obtain similar results about universal Laurent series.
