Let \(\pi\) be a cuspidal automorphic representation of \(\mathrm{GL}_r(\mathbb{A})\) with unitary central character \(\omega_\pi\) and \(\chi\) a unitary Hecke character. Let \(S\) be the finite set of places containing all the Archimedean places, places dividing 2, and the non-Archimedean places where \(\pi\) or \(\chi\) is ramified. In this paper, the author proves that the incomplete twisted symmetric square \(L\)-function \(L^S(s, \pi, \mathrm{Sym}^2 \otimes \chi)\) is holomorphic everywhere except that it has a possible pole at \(s = 0\) and \(s = 1\). Moreover, there is no pole if \(\chi^r \omega_\pi^2 \neq 1\). This is done by determining the poles of certain Eisenstein series of the metaplectic double cover \(\widetilde{\mathrm{GL}}_r\) of \(\mathrm{GL}_r\). The approach is based on the author's previous work [Duke Math. J. 163, No. 1, 175--266 (2014; Zbl 1316.11037)]. There, he used an Eisenstein series on \(\widetilde{\mathrm{GL}}_r\) to obtain an integral representation of \(L^S(s, \pi, \mathrm{Sym}^2 \otimes \chi)\) and showed that \(L^S(s, \pi, \mathrm{Sym}^2 \otimes \chi)\) is holomorphic for \(\mathrm{Re}(s)>1\).
