In this paper the authors deal with the gradings on the Lie algebra of the upper triangular matrices of order \(n\) over an infinite field with the objective of classify them. To do this, they start from that the elementary gradings on the associative algebra \(UT_n\) of the upper triangular matrices of order \(n\) over a field \(K\) were already described by Di Vincenzo, Koshluhov and Valenti in 2004 [\textit{O. M. Di Vincenzo} et al., J. Algebra 275, No. 2, 550--566 (2004; Zbl 1066.16047)] and that \textit{A. Valenti} and \textit{M. V. Zaicev} [Arch. Math. 89, No. 1, 33--40 (2007; Zbl 1151.16042)] proved three years later that any grading on \(UT_n\) is, up to a graded isomorphism, elementary. In their study they introduce another kind of gradings, that they call mirror type gradings, which are not isomorphic to elementary ones, even in a broader sense. It allows them to show that every grading is isomorphic either to elementary or to a mirror pattern type (MT) grading. These last gradings are related to the fact that the associative algebra \(UT_n\) possesses an involution, the flip along the second diagonal, which is a case quite different from the associative to the Lie one. After also studying elementary gradings, taking into consideration that in Lie algebra the center can be graded arbitrarily without ``changing'' much the grading, they finally give a classification of the gradings on \(UT_n\).
