    Let \[ M(\alpha, n)={1\over n} \sum_{d| n} \mu({n\over d}) \alpha^d \] denote the necklace polynomial, where \(\mu\) denotes the Möbius function. The necklace polynomial occurs in the cyclotomic identity \[ (1-\alpha y)^{-1}= \prod_{n=1}^\infty (1-y^n)^{-M(\alpha, n)}. \] For a formal power series \(f(z)\) with complex coefficients, and \(r>0\) integer, its \(r\)th Witt transform is \[ {\mathcal W}^{(r)}_f(z) ={1\over r}\sum_{d| r} \mu(d) f(z^d)^{r/d}. \] The paper studies a generalization of the cyclotomic identity by \textit{P. Moree} [Finite Fields Appl. 10, 438--463 (2004; Zbl 1061.11050)], and properties and applications of the Witt transform.
