Let \(G\) be a countable discrete group. The strong Novikov conjecture for \(G\) is the assertion that the assembly map from the \(K\)-homology of \(BG\) to the topological \(K\)-theory \(K^{t}_{*}\) of \(C^{*}(G)\) is rationally injective. The author uses a free simplicial resolution of \(G\) to impose filtrations that are respected by the assembly map. As a consequence, the author shows that the assembly map is rationally injective if and only if the corresponding (degree-preserving) map \(H_{*}(BG; \mathbf Q ) \rightarrow K^{t}_{*} (C^{*}(G))\otimes \mathbf Q\) is injective. The author also shows that free resolutions create a role for algebraic \(K\)-theory \(K^{a}_{*}\) by allowing the definitions of Abelian groups \(A_{n}\) (depending on \(G\)), \(C^{*}\)-algebras \(C_{n}\) (depending on \(G\)), and maps \(A_{n} \rightarrow H_{n}(BG; \mathbf Q )\) and \(A_{n} \rightarrow K^{a}_{1} (C_{n-1})\otimes \mathbf Q \rightarrow K^{t}_{1} (C_{n-1})\otimes \mathbf Q\). If \(y\in A_{n}\) has nonzero image in \(H_{n}(BG; \mathbf Q )\), then \(y\) has nonzero image in \(K^{a}_{1} (C_{n-1})\otimes \mathbf Q\). The analogous assertion, for all \(n\geq 1\) and with \(K^{t}_{1} (C_{n-1})\otimes \mathbf Q\) replacing \(K^{a}_{1} (C_{n-1})\otimes \mathbf Q\), is equivalent to the strong Novikov conjecture for \(G\).
