The paper is a brief and transparent manual for a number of interrelated subjects: toric geometry (Section 4), secondary fans (Section 5), tropical varieties (Section 6), tropical intersection theory and its relation to the classical one (Sections 8, 9), with some applications (e.g. a generalization of an argument from [\textit{A. Dickenstein}, \textit{E. M. Feichtner} and \textit{B. Sturmfels}, J. Am. Math. Soc. 20, No. 4, 1111--1133 (2007; Zbl 1166.14033)]). The exposition features many examples and is suitable for any reader with background in algebraic geometry.
