The paper under review is concerned with the following conjecture: If \(X\) is a compact Kähler manifold and \(Z\) a submanifold of dimension \(d\geq1\) with ample normal bundle, then its algebraic dimension satisfies \(a(X)\geq d+1\). The author studies three special cases: (a) \(Z\) moves in a family covering \(X\), (b) \(X\) is a hyperkähler manifold with \(a(X)\geq1\), (c) \(Z\) is uniruled. The main theorem asserts that in all these cases, \(X\) is projective. The proofs use some previous results of the author (see [\textit{K. Oguiso} and \textit{T. Peternell}, Commun. Anal. Geom. 12, No. 5, 1131--1154 (2004; Zbl 1069.32008); \textit{F. Campana}, \textit{K. Oguiso} and \textit{T. Peternell}, J. Differ. Geom. 85, No. 3, 397--424 (2010; Zbl 1232.53042); \textit{D. Barlet} and {J. Magnusson}, Asian J. Math. 8, No. 1, 173--214 (2004; Zbl 1086.32018)]). The remaining part of the paper is devoted to the study of the cone of curves in the projective context and the place of curves with ample normal bundle in such a cone. The leading question should be: is such a curve in the interior of the Mori cone \(\overline{NE}(X)\)? This is supported by the following theorem (Theorem 4.5): let X be a smooth projective variety and \(Y\subset X\) be a prime divisor with nef normal bundle. If \(C\) is a curve with ample normal bundle then \(Y\cap C\neq\emptyset\). The end of the paper deals with the movable cone instead of the Mori cone and a birational version of the preceding question is discussed.
