The authors study the algebraic dimension \(a(X)\) and the algebraic reduction of a compact hyper-Kähler manifold of dimension \(2n\). (A hyper-Kähler manifold is a compact simply connected Kähler manifold \(X\) admitting a holomorphic \(2\)-form \(\sigma_{X}\) of maximal rank at every point such that \(H^{0}(X,\Omega_{X}^{2})=\mathbb{C}\sigma_{X}\). Its dimension is even.) It is shown that the algebraic dimension \(a(X)\) of a compact hyper-Kähler manifold of dimension \(2n\) is at most \(n\), unless \(X\) is projective. It is conjectured that the only possible values of \(a(X)\) for a non-projective compact hyper-Kähler manifold of dimension \(2n\) are \(0\) and \(n\). This is proved for \(n=2\) without additional assumptions. For \(n>2\), the conjecture holds, provided that any compact Kähler manifold \(Y\) with \(\dim Y\leq2n-1\) with algebraic dimension \(0\) and Kodaira dimension \(0\) has a minimal model. In case of middle dimension, the algebraic reduction is holomorphic Lagrangian. The paper also gives structure-results for ``generalised hyper-Kähler'' manifolds and studies nef (numerically effective) line bundles (line bundles \(L\) over \(X\) such that the first Chern class \(c_{1}(L)\) belongs to the closure of the Kähler cone of \(X\), i.e., the closed cone generated by smooth non-negative \(d\)-closed \((1,1)\)-forms).
