Cellular algebras were introduced by \textit{J. J. Graham} and \textit{G. I. Lehrer} [Invent. Math. 123, No. 1, 1--34 (1996; Zbl 0853.20029)]. A cellular algebra consists of an associative algebra admitting an anti-involution and a specific basis with interesting multiplicative properties. The construction of a cellular basis gives a class of modules and an invariant bilinear form on them that lead to criteria on semi-simplicity and information on the decomposition numbers. This article constructs a cellular basis for the generalized Schur algebras \(S^A(n,d)\) defined by \textit{A. Evseev} and \textit{A. Kleshchev} [Adv. Math. 317, 665--717 (2017; Zbl 1475.20084); Ann. Math. (2) 188, No. 2, 453--512 (2018; Zbl 1435.20010] for all integers \(n,d\geq 0\), when \(A\) is itself a cellular algebra. The method employed is to identify \(S^A(n,d)\) with the \(d\)-th divided power of the \(n\times n\) matrices algebra over \(A\) and to use a generalized Cauchy filtration providing a chain of bimodules parametrized by multipartitions in combination with the basis-free characterization of cellular algebras of \textit{S. König} and \textit{C. Xi} [in: Algebras and modules II. Eighth international conference on representations of algebras, Geiranger, Norway, August 4--10, 1996. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society. 365--386 (1998; Zbl 0926.16016)] to conclude. In doing so, the author obtains an elegant proof of recent results on the cellularity of wreath product algebras \(A\wr\mathfrak{S}_d\) by \textit{T. Geetha} and \textit{F. M. Goodman} [J. Algebra 389, 151--190 (2013; Zbl 1350.16016)], and their generalisation by \textit{R. Green} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 224, No. 2, 819--835 (2020; Zbl 1490.16044)] using generalized Schur-Weyl duality.
