A Note on fundamental solutions
This note is prompted by a recent paper of \textit{A. Klingler} [ibid. 22, No. 11-12, 2051-2060 (1997; Zbl 0896.58068)], who gave a new derivation of the formula of Gaveau and Hulanicki for the heat kernel for the Heisenberg sub-Laplacian and placed the formula in a new context. Klingler used probabilistic machinery, the Feynman-Kac-Itô formula, the magnetic propagator, and the Fourier transform. Here we observe that there is a simpler and more direct derivation of this formula, based on a convenient ansatz. The same method applies to large class of operators that may or may not be group invariant, including certain degenerate elliptic operators and kinetic operators. We sketch the range of possible applicability, discuss briefly the analytic problems, and compute a few representative examples.
