A Variational Method in Image Recovery

From MaRDI portal

This paper is concerned with a classical denoising and deblurring problem in image recovery, or more precisely, to study the problem of image reconstruction via the calculus of variations and partial differential equations. The model studied for a continuous image is that described by German and German for a numerical image or a slight modification of it. Firstly, the minimization problem is presented precisely, as well as the assumptions to impose on the results. Next, by using the Fenchel-Legendre transform, the authors show how a dual variable \(b\) is introduced in the energy \(J\) (possibly convex), allowing them to reduce the minimization of \(J\) to a sequence of quadratic minimization problems. Then, on the basis of a singular perturbation result of Teman, the existence and uniqueness of a solution \(f_0\) is proved rigorously. Furthermore, an iterative algorithm in continuous variables for computing the solution \(f_0\) is described, together with a convergence proof. Finally, by using the finite element method, they develop the numerical analysis of the approximated problem, and try to validate the model by presenting some examples with synthetic or real images.
