A class of functional equations for additive functions
The paper discusses various methods for solving functional equations of the form\N\[\N\sum_{j=1}^{k}x^{p_j}f_j(x^{q_j})=0,\qquad x\in R. \N\]\NHere \(f_j\colon R\to S\) are unknown {additive} functions, \(R\) is a subring of a commutative ring \(S\) and \(p_j,q_j\) are non-negative integers.\N\NThese methods, developed over the past decades, are presented in the paper together with new observations and illustrative examples. As noted by the author, the general theory presented here also encompasses some specific results that have been published recently.
