A nonlinear diffusion-absorption equation with unbounded initial data

[For the entire collection see Zbl 0745.00053).] We consider the questions of existence, uniqueness and interface behaviour for nonnegative solutions of the Cauchy Problem \[ \begin{cases} u_ t = (u^ m)_{xx} - u^ p & \text{in \(S = \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^ +\)}\\ u(x,0) = u_ 0(x) & \text{on \(\mathbb{R}\)}\end{cases}\tag{I} \] where \(u_ 0\) is a continuous and nonnegative function which can be unbounded on \(\mathbb{R}\), in the exponent range \(1 < p < m\). Our results can be very conveniently exemplified by taking into consideration the family of initial functions \[ u_ 0(x) = {\begin{cases} cx^ \lambda & x \geq 0,\\ 0 & x < 0,\end{cases}} \] where \(c\) and \(\lambda\) are positive numbers. Let \(\gamma=2/(m-p)\) be the critical exponent. We prove the following results. If \(\lambda < \gamma\), then Problem (I) has a unique solution. If \(\lambda > \gamma\), then Problem (I) has no solution. If \(\lambda = \gamma\) the results depend strongly on the value of \(c\).
