Algebrability and Riemann integrability of the composite function

From MaRDI portal

The paper under review explores the existence of large algebraic structures within sets of Riemann integrable and continuous functions. In particular, the authors construct a \(2^{\mathfrak{c}}\)-generated free algebra \(S \subset \mathbb{R}^\mathbb{R}\) of Riemann integrable functions (on any interval \([\alpha,\beta]\)) and a \(\mathfrak{c}\)-generated free algebra \(C \subset \mathbb{R}^{[0,1]}\) of continuous functions such that the composition \(r \circ c\) is not Riemann integrable for any \(r \in S\) and \(c \in C\). This result is sharp in terms of dimensions.\N\NThis result extends and improves Theorem~2.7 of [\textit{D.~Azagra} et al., J. Math. Anal. Appl. 354, No.~1, 229--233 (2009; Zbl 1171.26005)], where only the linear structure (not the algebraic one) is considered.\N\NThe authors also provide a new and more direct proof of the strong \(2^{\mathfrak{c}}\)-algebrability of the subset \(\mathcal{B}\) of \(\mathbb{R}^{[0,1]}\) of bounded functions, which originally appeared in [\textit{A.~Bartoszewicz} et al., Linear Algebra Appl. 438, No.~9, 3689--3701 (2013; Zbl 1337.15003)].
