Analytic continuation in representation theory and harmonic analysis

From MaRDI portal

This is a review paper in which the author explains a number of representation theoretic results in the context of harmonic analysis on symmetric spaces which can be obtained using various analytic continuation techniques. He starts with the holomorphic extension of highest weight representations to complex semigroups as discovered by Olshanskii and studied in depth by Neeb. Then he turns to generalizations of the Bargmann-Segal transform obtained by restricting holomorphic functions to totally real submanifolds and shows examples where it can be used to construct intertwining operators between unitary highest weight representations.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEGiven a symmetric space \(G/H\) one can construct a dual group \(G^c\) from the duality \({\mathfrak g}={\mathfrak h}+{\mathfrak q}\leftrightarrow{\mathfrak h}^c={\mathfrak h}+ i{\mathfrak q}\). If one starts with a suitable principal series representation \(\pi\) of \(G^c\), composes it with the involution \(\tau: G^c\to G^c\) of \(G^c/H\) and restricts it to a certain subsemigroup, then an analytic continuation theorem due to Lüscher and Mack yields a representation \(\widetilde\pi\) of \(\widetilde G\), the simply connected covering of \(G\). It is irreducible iff \(\pi\) is irreducible and in the special situation considered by Ólafsson can be identified as a highest weight representation.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEFinally, the author explains how to find explicit formulas for distribution characters of holomorphic discrete series representations of \(G\) from spherical functions on \(G^c/H\) via an analytic continuation argument of Krötz.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0973.00041].
