Approximation of polynomial hulls by analytic varieties: a counterexample

From MaRDI portal

The author provides an example of a connected compact set \(K \subset \mathbb C^2\) with the polynomial hull \(\hat{K}\) having the following property: there exists \(p \in \hat{K} \setminus K\) so that there does not exist a sequence \(\{A_n\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}\), \(A_n \Subset \mathbb C^2\) of analytic sets with boundary satisfying \(p \in A_n\) for each \(n \in \mathbb N\) and \(\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} bA_n \subset K\) in the Hausdorff metric.\N\NThe example extends the previously known ones of the same spirit. \textit{B. D. Drnovšek} and \textit{F. Forstnerič} [Ill. J. Math. 56, No. 1, 53--65 (2012; Zbl 1311.32013)] showed that the disc hull and the polynomial hull coincide for those connected compacts \(K \subset \mathbb C^n\) that are invariant with respect to the natural action of the unit circle \(\mathbb T \subset \mathbb C\) on \(\mathbb C^n\) and raised the question whether this remains true for every connected compact \(K\). They also provided a counterexample but with \(K\) not connected. \textit{E. Porten} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 145, No. 10, 4443--4448 (2017; Zbl 1382.32008)] then constructed a connected compact that coincides with its disc hull but has a nontrivial polynomial hull. The present (counter)example replaces the discs by arbitrary analytic sets with boundary.
