Block P-matrices

From MaRDI portal

A real \(n\times n\) natrix is called a \(P\)-matrix if all of its principal minors are positive. The class of \(P\)-matrices is closed under inversion and under multiplication by positive diagonal matrices, and a number of equivalent criteria for this class are known [see, for example, \textit{R. A. Horn} and \textit{C. R. Johnson}, Topics in matrix analysis. (1991; Zbl 0729.15001)]. The present paper explores corresponding block matrix analogues of these criteria. \ The block analogues of these criteria are no longer equivalent, and the authors conclude that the ``best way to generalize the definition of a \(P\)-matrix is as follows. A block matrix \(A=\left[ A_{ij}\right] \) is called a block \(P\)-matrix if, for each compatible block diagonal matrix \(D= \text{diag} (T_{1},\dots,T_{k})\) with each \(T_{i}\) of the form \(t_{i}I_{n_{i}}\) with \(0\leq t_{i}\leq 1,\) we have \(\det(TA+I-T)\neq 0.\) \ Various properties of these matrices are investigated.
