Categories with algebraic structure

From MaRDI portal

The idea of category with algebraic structure is that it generalizes the notion of set with algebraic structure, which is the fundamental object of the study of universal algebra. The generalization of universal algebra from sets to categories is not immediate. Sets have just elements inside them, whereas categories have both objects and arrows, so one may have operators that yield either an object or an arrow. Moreover, the only primitive relation between elements of a set is equality, whereas two objects of a category may be isomorphic without being equal. The purpose of the paper is to develop a precise notion of category with algebraic structure. With this notion several structures that arise in computer science and in mathematics are categories with algebraic structure. The author considers the study of sets with extra structures and lifts central ideas from sets to categories, making modifications which are required by the special features of categories in order to deduce the results sought. Among these is a characterization of the models that arise and of the limiting or colimiting properties of the category of such models. In the framework proposed, one can make precise the idea that a programming language may be regarded as freely generated from basic data and specified algebraic structure.
