Cofinality in Normal Almost Compact Spaces

From MaRDI portal

A Tychonoff space is almost compact if the remainder of its Stone- Čech compactification has at most one element, and a regular space is normal and almost compact if and only if at least one of any pair of disjoint closed sets is compact. An NAC space is a noncompact, normal, almost compact space; the standard example of an NAC space is an ordinal space of uncountable cofinality. The authors extend the notion of cofinality in such ordinal spaces to arbitrary NAC spaces by defining, for an NAC space \(X\), \(cf(X)\) to be the least cardinal of free closed filterbase on \(X\). Along with their investigation of the extent to which cofinality in NAC spaces resembles cofinality in ordinal spaces is included discussion of normality of products and continuous images of NAC spaces. Many examples and open questions accompany the discussion.
