Complex and quaternionic analogues of Busemann's random simplex and intersection inequalities

From MaRDI portal

This paper establishes Busemann's random simplex inequality and the Busemann intersection inequality in complex and quaternionic vector spaces. Let \({\mathbb F}\) be either \({\mathbb R}\), \({\mathbb C}\) or the skew field \({\mathbb H}\) of quaternions. For \(n\in{\mathbb N}\), let \(\det(x_1,\dots,x_n)\) be the Dieudonné determinant of the matrix with columns \(x_1,\dots,x_n \in{\mathbb F}^n\). The first main result reads as follows. Let \(\Phi:[0,\infty)\to{\mathbb R}\) be strictly increasing. For convex bodies (in the usual real sense) \(K_1,\dots,K_n\subset {\mathbb F}^n\) set \N\[\N{\mathscr B}(K_1,\dots,K_n)= \int_{x_1\in K_1} \dots \int_{x_n\in K_n} \Phi(|\det(x_1,\dots,x_n)|)d x_1\cdots d x_n.\N\]\NThen \({\mathscr B}(K_1,\dots,K_n)\ge {\mathscr B}(B_1,\dots,B_n)\), where \(B_i\) is the centered Euclidean ball with the same volume as \(K_i\). For \(K_1,\dots,K_n\) with non-empty interior, equality holds if and only if the \(K_i\) are homothetic centered (real, complex, or quaternionic) ellipsoids. The proof makes use of symmetrization with respect to (real, complex, or quaternionic) hyperplanes. The quaternionic case requires extra preparations. Analogues of the Busemann intersection inequality are then derived via a linear Blaschke-Petkantschin type formula. The paper discusses also related results and conjectures.
