Computer simulation of dynamic phenomena

From MaRDI portal

The book describes a unified approach to numerical simulations of physical processes in liquids, gases and solids. Considerable part of the text concerns with the physical background relevant to the considered problems. It includes elements of fluid dynamics (the governing equations, propagation of discontinuities, detonation and plastic waves etc.), material behaviour (elastic and plastic flows, yield conditions, hardening, fracture etc.), thermal and radiation diffusion. The numerical technique described in the book is based on the conservation laws for continuum media written in Lagrangian coordinates. To approximate the involved derivatives, the divergence theorem is used providing conservative schemes. An artificial viscosity is added to suppress spurious oscillations and to prevent undesirable grid distortions. In the above manner, the author considers one-, two- and three-dimensional cases. Much attention is given to elastic-plastic flows in several dimensions. A method of attack used when modelling sliding interfaces is described in detail. The book presents also other applications including shock waves, a slender body motion with subsonic and supersonic speeds, the origin of earthquake, magnetohydrodynamics etc. In all cases, the relevant methodology is covered comprehensively.
