Control and optimization methods for complex system resilience

From MaRDI portal

It is known \N(see [\textit{A. A. Martynyuk}, Stability of motion of complex systems. Kiev: Izd. Naukova Dumka (1975)])\N that, in contrast to a simple system, complex systems have a variable structure, nonlinear links, non-holonomic connections, deterministic and/or stochastic disturbances of the system parameters. In the process of operation of a complex system, phenomena of self-organization and adaptation or cascade evolution may occur. Among the many complex systems of the real world, modern power systems are of great interest due to their role in industry and everyday life of people. Thus, the problem of stability of a complex system in the process of its operation is one of the fundamental problems of engineering and technology. The book under review contains some solution to this problem by means of effective methods of control and optimization for increasing the stability of complex dynamic systems at various stages of evolution. This monograph consists of 12 chapters and lists of literature for each chapter separately. Chapter 1 discusses the problem of resilience of a complex system. In particular, three interrelated steps are proposed to achieve resilience: identify the initial contingency that causes the worst cascading failures; design protection schemes to prevent cascading outages; develop a recovery strategy and integrate it with disturbance identification and system protection.\N\N``The remainder of this book is outlined as follows: Chapter 2 proposes an optimal control approach to identify the worst-case cascading failures by regarding the initial disturbances as control inputs of complex cascade systems. Then the Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov method is adopted to detect the disruptive contingencies of complex cascade systems with strong coupling of different components in Chapter 3. To deal with the problem of security assessment, the Gaussian process approach is developed to learn the state trajectories of dynamical systems to explore the region of attraction with the aid of converse Lyapunov function in Chapters 4 and 5. In addition, an optimal control algorithm is proposed to identify the risks of protected systems in Chapter 6. Besides algorithms for risk identification and security assessment, a model predictive approach is designed to prevent cascading outages in Chapter 7. Afterwards, a robust optimization approach is proposed to deal with the uncertain cascading paths in Chapter 8. Moreover, Chapter 9 comes up with a cooperative controller for relieving the system stress using FACTS devices. In Chapter 10, a distributed compensating strategy is developed for system protection against disruptive contingencies. Chapter 11 focuses on the system recovery using the RL approach. Finally, Chapter 12 summarizes the whole book and discusses some potential research topics in the future.\N\NNote that the book \N[\textit{A. A. Martynyuk} and \textit{Yu. A. Martynyuk-Chernienko}, Uncertain dynamical systems. Stability and motion control. Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press (2012; Zbl 1241.37001)]\N presents the results of the analysis of the dynamics and stability of the motion of systems with uncertain parameters values, which the author does not mention in Chapter 8. In the whole, the book is of considerable interest to specialists working in the field of stability theories and applications, in particular, the stability of power systems.
