Convex cocompactness for Coxeter groups

From MaRDI portal

A notion that is in between those of general finitely generated discrete subgroups and co-compact lattices in semi-simple Lie groups of real rank one, is that of so-called convex co-compact subgroups. Many geometric and dynamical properties are revealed by the action of the latter groups on the associated Riemannian symmetric space and the visual boundary at infinity.\N\NIn the setting of higher-rank semi-simple Lie groups, a corresponding notion of a convex co-compact subgroup that guarantees existence of many examples and has similar dynamical properties, is difficult to come up with, because the most natural generalization of convex co-compactness in higher rank Riemannian symmetric spaces, turns out to be quite restrictive.\N\NRecently, the first three authors had studied various notions of convex co-compactness for discrete subgroups of the higher rank semi-simple Lie group \(\mathrm{PGL}(V)\) acting on the projective space \(P(V)\), where \(V\) is a finite-dimensional real vector space. Their study generalized the classical theory of convex co-compactness occurring in real hyperbolic geometry, as well as the theory of divisible convex sets, that was developed by \textit{Y. Benoist} [Adv. Lect. Math. (ALM) 6, 1--18 (2008; Zbl 1154.22016)].\N\NIn the present paper, the authors study these notions in the context of Vinberg's more general notion of discrete reflection groups. Consequently, the authors also give an application to Anosov representations for word hyperbolic Coxeter groups.\N\NThree notions of convex co-compactness (`naively convex co-compact', convex co-compact and `strongly convex co-compact') in \(P(V)\), were considered in the earlier paper of the first three authors mentioned above, for an infinite discrete subgroup of \(\mathrm{GL}(V)\).\N\NThe main Theorems 1.3 and 1.8 of the present paper give:\N\N(i) a necessary and sufficient condition for a reflection group to be convex co-compact in \(P(V)\) which implies that the three notions coincide for right-angled reflection groups;\N\N(ii) for general reflection groups, naive convex co-compactness is equivalent to convex co-compactness, but there exist reflection groups (which are not right-angled) which are convex co-compact but not strongly convex co-compact in \(P(V)\).
