Coxeter-type quotients of surface braid groups

From MaRDI portal

Let \(M\) be a closed surface, \(n\ge 2\) and \(q\ge 3\). The paper studies the Coxeter-type quotient \(B_n(M)(q)\) of the surface braid group \(B_n(M)\) obtained by adding the relation \(\sigma_1^q=1\), where \(\sigma_1\) is a standard Artin generator and compares this situation with the classical finiteness phenomenon for analogous quotients of the Artin braid group.\N\NOne of the main results establishes that if \(M\) is a closed surface different from the sphere and the projective plane, then \(B_n(M)(q)\) is infinite for all \(n,q\ge 3\). The paper also computes the abelianization of \(B_n(M)(q)\) in these cases, expressing it in terms of \(H_1(M)\) and a cyclic factor depending on \(q\) and the orientability of \(M\).\N\NFor \(M=S^2\) and \(M=\mathbb{RP}^2\), the authors determine the abelianization of \(B_n(M)(q)\) and it provides additional finiteness information for sphere braid groups in low numbers of strings. The paper concludes with an analysis of related quotients obtained by factoring out the commutator subgroup of the corresponding pure braid group and then imposing \(\sigma_1^q=1\), giving finiteness results in the disk case and infiniteness results for closed orientable surfaces of positive genus.
