Decentralized active control of cable-stayed bridges

From MaRDI portal

The authors study the mathematical modeling technique used in the analysis of the dynamic behavior of a segment of a cable-stayed bridge. More exactly, they design a nonlinear decentralized active controller that reduces the transversal deflections of a segment of a cable-stayed bridge caused by the vertical component of an earthquake. Such a controller is capable of reducing the deflections to within a prescribed limit. Furthermore, it shows a good degree of robustness. Practically, the bridge deck segment is approximated by a uniform beam of constant mass. Actuators and sensors are collocated and are placed on the bridge deck at \(x= L/6\) and \(x= L/2\), respectively, and the control forces are generated by increasing or decreasing the effective length of the stay cable relative to the pre-tensed equilibrium length.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe authors show that active decentralized control algorithms can be effective in reducing the magnitude of the deflections of the deck of a real-life cable-stayed bridge and the design methodology is simple.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0959.00020].
