Decomposition of $B(G)$

Let \(A(G)\) and \(B(G)\) be the Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras defined on a locally compact topological group \(G\). If \(G\) is abelian, then \(A(G)\simeq L^{1}(\Gamma)\cong \widehat{L^{1}(\Gamma)}\) and \( B(G)\approx M(\Gamma)\cong \widehat{M(\Gamma)}\). Here \(\Gamma \) is the dual group of \(G\), and \(\widehat{L^{1}(\Gamma)}\) and \(\widehat{ M^{1}(\Gamma)}\) are the spaces of Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes transforms of \(L^{1}(\Gamma)\) and \(M(\Gamma)\), respectively. In the abelian case, the Lebesgue decomposition theorem shows that \(M(\Gamma)=L^{1}(\Gamma)\oplus M_{s}(\Gamma)\), where \(M_{s}(\Gamma)\) denotes the subspace of \(M(\Gamma)\) consisting of all the singular measures with respect to the Haar measure on \(\Gamma \). If \(G\) is an amenable locally compact group (need not be abelian or compact), \textit{G. Arsac }[Publ. Dép. Math. Lyon 13, 1-101 (1976; Zbl 0365.43005)] proved that \(B(G)=A(G)\oplus B^{s}(G)\), the direct sum of \(A(G)\) and a subspace \(B^{s}(G)\) of \(B(G)\). The main purpose of this paper is to study the properties of \(A(G)\) and \(B^{s}(G)\). The author proves essentially that (1) an element \(b\in B(G)\) is also in \(A(G)\) if and only if, for any \(\varepsilon >0\), there is a compact subset \(K\subset G\) such that \( |\langle f,b\rangle |<\varepsilon \) for all \(f\in L^{1}(G)\) satisfying \(\|f\|_{C^{\ast }(G)}\leq 1\) and \(\text{supp}(f)\subset K^{c}\), the complement of \(K\) in \(G\). Here \(C^{\ast }(G)\) stands for the group \(C^{\ast }\)-algebra regarding the Banach dual of B\((G)\). (2) The subspace \(B^{s}(G)\) is the subspace of \(B(G)\) such that \(B^{s}(G)\ast M(G)\subset B^{s}(G)\) in which it consists of all elements \(b\in B(G)\) satisfying the property: for any \(\varepsilon >0\) and any compact set \(K\subset G\), there is an \(f\in L^{1}(G)\) with \(\|f\|_{C^{\ast}(G)}\leq 1\) and \(\text{supp}(f)\subset K^{c}\) such that \(|\langle f,b\rangle |>\|b\|-\varepsilon \). The author proves these results without assuming the amenability of \(G\). (The case of amenable locally compact groups was treated by \textit{V. Flory} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 29, 603-606 (1971; Zbl 0217.14903)]).
