Determination of a Third-Order Operator from Two of Its Spectra
In this article it is shown that the real coefficients \(p\in L^2[0,1]\) and \(q\in H^1[0,1]\) with \(q(0)=0\) in the selfadjoint differential operator \[ L_{p,q}=i(d/dx)^3-i(d/dx)q+iq(d/dx)+p \] on \(L^2[0,1]\) can be uniquely determined from \(q(1)\) and two discrete eigenvalue spectra of \(L_{p,q}\) if the two sets of boundary conditions \[ y(1)=0,\quad y'(1)=\pm y'(0),\quad y(0)=0, \] are imposed and these two spectra do not have points in common. It is also proved that the spectra are simple, and their asymptotic behavior is found. The proofs are based on a counting lemma for the eigenvalues.
