Edge-Preserving Smoothers for Image Processing

From MaRDI portal

The authors propose a new image denoising technique aiming to preserve ``edges. That technique (M-smoother) is based on robust M-estimation ideas, with a redescending \(\psi\) function. Comparison of sigma filtering with M-smoothing is done through asymptotic analysis, simulated data, and one example from magnetic resonance imaging construction. It is seen that M-smoothing is typically superior. However the performance of the M-smoother depends critically on the choice of the window width parameters and some specific recommendations about these parameters are done. Finally, an iterative algorithm for calculating the M-smoother is suggested. The ideas presented by the authors and discussants are beyond the specific subject and, therefore, are stimulating and enrich the field of statistical techniques in image processing and analysis. Though the validity of the presented results is restricted to the kind of images under analysis, this work is recomended to every person that works with images.
