Eigenvalue problems with unbalanced growth

From MaRDI portal

The authors consider the following nonlinear eigenvalue problem\N\[\N- \mbox{div}\, a( \nabla u ) =\lambda f(z,u) \mbox{ in }\Omega, \\\Nu\big|_{\partial \Omega}=0, \, \lambda \in \mathbb{R}, \, \Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N\N\]\Ndriven by the differential operator \(a(y)=\alpha(z)|y|^{p-2}y+|y|^{q-2}y\), \(1<q<p<N\), \(\alpha \in C^{0,1}(\overline{\Omega})\), \(\alpha(z)>0\) for all \(z \in \Omega\). Under assumptions on the weight function \(\alpha \in C^{0,1}(\overline{\Omega})\) and on the nonlinearity \(f:\Omega \times \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}\), hence using suitable Rayleigh quotients and variational methods, the authors describe the spectrum of the problem in Theorem 1 (bifurcation type theorem establishing an existence result for an upper half line, and a nonexistence result for a lower half line).
