Equidistribution of polynomial sequences in function fields, with applications

From MaRDI portal

A fundamental result in equidistribution theory states that a sequence of integers is equidistributed modulo 1 if and only if it satisfies Weyl's criterion. Weyl also proved that for a polynomial \(f(u)=\sum\limits_{r=0}^k \alpha_ru^r\) the sequence \((f(n))_{n=1}^\infty\) is equidistributed modulo 1 if and only if at least one of the coefficients \(\alpha_1,\dots,\alpha_k\) is irrational.\N\NIn this paper, the authors prove a function field analogue of Weyl's classical theorem. In earlier results in this direction, the assumption that the degree of the polynomial is less than the characteristic of the field was used, which is a natural barrier when applying the so-called Weyl differencing process to function fields. However, the main result of the current paper also covers the case in which its degree is greater than or equal to the characteristic of the field, representing important progress towards a full characterization of equidistributed polynomial sequences.
