Explosive instabilities in mechanics

From MaRDI portal

The object of the book is to present an account of problems in applied mathematics where the solution, or one of its derivatives, blows up in a finite time or grows very rapidly but needs not to cease to exist in a finite time. The emphasis is on problems which occur in some fields of mechanics. The topics include classical fluid equations, several nonlinear fluid theories, models from combustion theory which lead to nonlinear Volterra equations, chemotaxis, mechanical problems which change type from hyperbolic to elliptic, and parallel shear flows where the kinetic energy can have very large transient growth. The main aim is to report on results which guarantee that very rapid instabilities occur but many numerical studies are also mentioned. The large collection of mechanics applications where singularities may form will be of interest for graduate students as well as researchers in applied mathematics and mechanics.
