Finite-difference approximation of free-discontinuity problems

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: We approximate functionals depending on the gradient of u and on the behaviour of u near the discontinuity points, by families of non-local functionals where the gradient is replaced by finite differences. We prove pointwise convergence, Gamma-convergence, and a compactness result which implies, in particular, the convergence of minima and minimizers.

Let \(\phi\), \(\psi:[0,+\infty[\to[0,+\infty[\) be given functions, and let \(\Omega\) be an open subset of \({\mathbf R}^n\). For every special function with bounded variation \(u\) (\(u\in \text{SBV}(\Omega)\)) let \(\mathcal F\) be defined by NEWLINE\[NEWLINE{\mathcal F}(u)=\int_\Omega\phi(|\nabla u(x)|) dx+\int_{S_u}\psi(|u^+(x)-u^-(x)|) d{\mathcal H}^{n-1}(x),NEWLINE\]NEWLINE where \(\nabla u\) is the approximate gradient of \(u\), \(S_u\) is the set of essential discontinuity points of \(u\), \(u^+(x)\) and \(u^-(x)\) are the approximate (in the measure theoretic sense) \(\limsup\) and \(\liminf\) of \(u\) at the point \(x\).NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEStarting from the De Giorgi's approximation of the Mumford-Shah functional, the paper is devoted to the study of the approximability of \(\mathcal F\) by families of non-local functionals where the gradient is replaced by finite differences. The approximability is intended in the pointwise sense, and in the sense of \(\Gamma\)-convergence.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEMore precisely, if for every \(\varepsilon>0\) NEWLINE\[NEWLINE{\mathcal F}_\varepsilon(u)=\int_{{\mathbf R}^n\times{\mathbf R}^n}\phi_{\varepsilon|\xi|}\left({|u(x+\varepsilon\xi)-u(x)|\over\varepsilon|\xi|}\right)\eta(\xi) d\xi dx,NEWLINE\]NEWLINE where \(\{\phi_\rho\}_{\rho>0}\) is a family of Borel functions and \(\eta\in L^1({\mathbf R}^n)\), the paper is aimed to the study of the following problems:NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE(i) given \(\{\phi_\rho\}_{\rho>0}\), provide estimates for the \(\Gamma\)-limit of \(\{{\mathcal F}_\varepsilon\}_{\varepsilon>0}\) in terms of \(\{\phi_\rho\}_{\rho>0}\),NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE(ii) find \(\{\phi_\rho\}_{\rho>0}\) such that the family \(\{{\mathcal F}_\varepsilon\}_{\varepsilon>0}\) converges to \(\mathcal F\) pointwise, or in the sense of \(\Gamma\)-convergence.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEA compactness result is also established which implies the convergence of minima and of minimizers of \({\mathcal F}_\varepsilon\) to those of \(\mathcal F\).NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINESome examples are also discussed.
