Finitely presented simple groups with no piecewise projective actions
In the paper under review, the authors construct an explicit infinite family of pairwise non-isomorphic infinite simple groups of type \(F_\infty\) (in particular, finitely presented) which act faithfully on the circle \(\mathbf{S}\simeq \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}\) by orientation-preserving homeomorphisms, but admit no non-trivial piecewise projective, hence no piecewise affine, action on the projective line \(\mathbf{P}\). The examples arise from forest-skein groups, introduced to connect Jones' subfactor theory with Richard Thompson's groups \(F,T,V\) and they are defined by a diagrammatic calculus.\N\NThe groups are obtained as derived subgroups \(D(G_n)\) of certain \(T\)-type forest-skein groups \(G_n\) (for \(n\ge 3\)). A crucial structural point is that is that \(D(G)\) is simple if and only if the canonical action \(\alpha:G\curvearrowright\mathcal{C}\) on the Cantor space is faithful and faithfulness is established via a reconstruction theorem by \textit{S.~H.~McCleary} and \textit{M.~Rubin} [``Locally moving groups and the reconstruction problem for chains and circles, Preprint \url{arXiv:math/0510122}]. To rule out piecewise projective actions on \(\mathbf{P}\), the authors use that neither \(\mathrm{PL}_+(\mathbb{R})\) nor \(\mathrm{PP}_+(\mathbb{R})\) contains a non-abelian free subgroup, while a suitable subgroup \(D(K)\) contains such a free subgroup. Finally, denoting by \(Q\) the rational points in \(\mathbf{S}\), they compute the groups of germs of the action \(\gamma_n:D(G_n)\curvearrowright\mathbf{S}\) and deduce that \(D(G_n)\cong D(G_m)\) holds only if \(n=m\).
