Foliation adjunction

From MaRDI portal

The adjunction formula for varieties relates the canonical divisor of a smooth variety \(X\) and the canonical divisor of a smooth codimension one subvariety \(D\subset X\) by the linear equivalence \((K_X+D)|_D\sim K_D\). In the paper under review, the authors present an adjunction formula for foliations on varieties (see Proposition-Definition 3.7). This gives a way to relate the singularity of the foliation to that of its restriction to a prime divisor.\N\NThe main result Theorem 1.1 states that: Let \(X\) be a \(\mathbb{Q}\)-factorial variety, let \(\mathcal{F}\) be a foliation of rank \(r\) and let \(D\) be a prime divisor which is not \(\mathcal{F}\)-invariant. Suppose that \((\mathcal{F},D)\) is canonical (resp.~log canonical). Let \(S\to D\) be the normalisation of \(D\). Then \((\mathcal{F}_S,\text{Diff}_S(\mathcal{F}))\) is canonical (resp.~log canonical) (see Proposition-Definition 3.7 for the notation involved).\N\NSeveral applications are addressed. The first application is a proof of the cone theorem for pairs \((\mathcal{F},\Delta)\) where \(\mathcal{F}\) is a rank one foliation (see Theorem 1.2). The second application is an extension of certain dynamical characterisation of ample line bundles on smooth surfaces to higher dimensions (see Theorem 1.3). Finally, the authors study the algebraic part of foliations with canonical singularities in Theorem 1.4 and Corollary 1.5.
