Free boundary problems

From MaRDI portal

This paper is concerned with free boundary value problems which can be solved by methods based on the calculus of variations. Roughly speaking a free boundary value problem is a problem with not only a function but also a set as unknown. In this paper the free boundary value problems are transformed into usual minimization problems where the free boundaries disappear and unknown are functions (or measures). In each problem the free boundary can be constructed by the solution of the transformed problem. To describe the methods the author refers to four physical problems: the obstacle problem, the dam problem, the image segmentation problem, and a shape optimization problem. In each problem, a mathematical formulation is given, the problem is transformed into a minimization problem, and finally the solution is obtained. The question of regularity of the free boundary is left out of consideration. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0908.00012].
