Generating the mapping class group of a punctured surface by involutions

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: Let Sigmag,b denote a closed orientable surface of genus g with b punctures and let mMod(Sigmaextitg,b) denote its mapping class group. In [Luo] Luo proved that if the genus is at least 3, mMod(Sigmaextitg,b) is generated by involutions. He also asked if there exists a universal upper bound, independent of genus and the number of punctures, for the number of torsion elements/involutions needed to generate mMod(Sigmaextitg,b). Brendle and Farb [BF] gave an answer in the case of ggeq3,b=0 and ggeq4,b=1, by describing a generating set consisting of 6 involutions. Kassabov showed that for every b mMod(Sigmaextitg,b) can be generated by 4 involutions if ggeq8, 5 involutions if ggeq6 and 6 involutions if ggeq4. We proved that for every b mMod(Sigmaextitg,b) can be generated by 4 involutions if ggeq7 and 5 involutions if ggeq5.

It is a well-known consequence of the lantern relations in mapping class groups that mapping class groups of surfaces can be generated by finitely many involutions. The article under review extends work of Kassabov, which shows that the mapping class group of a surface \(S_{g,b}\) of genus \(g\) with \(b\) punctures is generated by four involutions if \(g>7\) or if \(g=7\) and \(b\) is even, five involutions if \(g>5\) or if \(g=5\) and \(b\) is even, and by six involutions if \(g>3\) or if \(g=3\) and \(b\) is even. The author complements these results by showing that the mapping class group is generated by four involutions if \(g=7\) and \(b\) is odd, and by five involutions if \(g=5\) and \(b\) is odd.
