Geometric modeling with splines: an introduction
This book is an introductory text which gives the reader the knowledge suitable for designing with splines. The authors have structured the material in four parts. The first part provides an introduction which presents relevant terms as ``shape approximation and ``variation diminishing. The most common types of representations of curves and their characteristics can be found in the second part, specially those on conic sections which are used for geometric modeling. Piecewise conics and homogeneous coordinates to represent conics are considered in a constructive geometric approach. The problem of characterizing the shape of a parametric curve in terms of its differential properties is presented in a chapter Bézier curves and B-splines are constructed following the approach first introduced with conics. The specific use of the rational spline curves, interpolation and approximation with splines, and the divided difference approach for B-splines are also considered in this part.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe third part is specially devoted to surfaces. Differential geometry for surfaces, the definition of a tensor product and a discussion on B-spline and Bézier tensor product surfaces are presented in this part. The problem of surface modelling is treated with interpolation techniques which are adapted to a wide variety of shape possibilities according to intuition. The Schoenberg variation diminishing spline approximation is here generalized to a tensor product approximation form. The third part finishes with the problem of modelling with B-spline surfaces.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe fourth part of the book deals with advanced techniques. This part contains some refinements theorems and algorithms for subdivision of B-splines as well as specialized algorithms for subdivision of Bézier curves and surfaces.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEPractically all the chapters have some examples and exercises. Many figures illustrate the concepts and techniques. The bibliography contains 88 titles on the subject and related works.
