Growth for the Central Polynomials

From MaRDI portal

For a PI-algebra \(A\) over a field \(F\) of characteristic 0, let \(\text{Id}(A)\subseteq F\langle x_1,x_2,\ldots\rangle\) be the vector space of the polynomial identities of \(A\) and let \(\text{Id}^z(A)\subseteq F\langle x_1,x_2,\ldots\rangle\) be the space of central polynomials of \(A\). Then the proper central polynomials of \(A\) correspond to the quotient space \(\text{Id}^z(A)/\text{Id}(A)\). In the paper under review, the author studies the problem of how many proper central polynomials has the algebra \(A\). By analogy with the ordinary (multilinear \(S_n\)-) cocharacters \(\chi_n(A)\) and the codimensions \(c_n(A)\) of \(A\), the author introduces the central cocharacters \(\chi_n^z(A)\) and codimensions \(c_n^z(A)\). Then the quantity of the proper central polynomials is determined by the differences \(\chi_n(A)-\chi_n^z(A)\) and \(\delta_n(A)=c_n(A)-c_n^z(A)\), \(n=1,2,\ldots\). The first main result describes the central characters \(\chi_n(G)-\chi_n^z(G)\) and the central dimensions \(\delta_n(G)\) for the infinite dimensional Grassmann algebra \(G\). The second main result states that for the algebra \(M_k(F)\) of the \(k\times k\) matrices there exist constants \(a_1,a_2,g_1,g_2\) such that for the subsequence \(\{n=mk^2\}_{m\geq 1}\) \N\[\N a_2\cdot n^{g_2}\cdot k^{2n}\leq \delta(M_k(F))\leq a_1\cdot n^{g_1}\cdot k^{2n}. \N\]\N In particular, restricted to the subsequence \(\{n=mk^2\}_{m\geq 1}\), \N\[\N \lim_{n\to\infty}(\delta(M_k(F)))^{1/n}=k^2. \N\]\N The paper ends with several open questions.
