Hamiltonian braids via generating functions

From MaRDI portal

The paper develops a Morse-theoretic framework, based on generating functions quadratic at infinity, to study collections of fixed points of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on surfaces through braid-theoretic invariants. The main contribution is the construction of a filtration on the tensor Morse complex associated to a generating function, defined via a combination of linking numbers and Conley-Zehnder indices. A central result shows that this filtration is monotone with respect to the differential, providing a finite-dimensional analogue of positivity of intersections in Floer theory. As an application, the author proves a stability result for braids of fixed points under small Hofer perturbations, recovering (in a slightly weaker form) results previously obtained using pseudoholomorphic curve techniques.\N\NConceptually, the paper offers an interesting bridge between generating function methods and Floer theory, showing that braid-type information can be encoded at the chain level without recourse to analytic machinery. The appendix, which relates the construction to a corresponding filtration in Floer homology, strengthens the relevance of the approach.
