Homogenization of the Neumann Problem for Elliptic Systems with Periodic Coefficients

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: Let mathcalOsubsetmathbbRd be a bounded domain with the boundary of class C1,1. In L2(mathcalO;mathbbCn), a matrix elliptic second order differential operator mathcalAN,varepsilon with the Neumann boundary condition is considered. Here varepsilon>0 is a small parameter, the coefficients of mathcalAN,varepsilon are periodic and depend on mathbfx/varepsilon. There are no regularity assumptions on the coefficients. It is shown that the resolvent (mathcalAN,varepsilon+lambdaI)−1 converges in the L2(mathcalO;mathbbCn)-operator norm to the resolvent of the effective operator mathcalAN0 with constant coefficients, as varepsilono0. A sharp order error estimate |(mathcalAN,varepsilon+lambdaI)−1−(mathcalAN0+lambdaI)−1|L2oL2leCvarepsilon is obtained. Approximation for the resolvent (mathcalAN,varepsilon+lambdaI)−1 in the norm of operators acting from L2(mathcalO;mathbbCn) to the Sobolev space H1(mathcalO;mathbbCn) with an error O(sqrtvarepsilon) is found. Approximation is given by the sum of the operator (mathcalAN0+lambdaI)−1 and the first order corrector. In a strictly interior subdomain mathcalO' a similar approximation with an error O(varepsilon) is obtained.
