Homological stability of spin mapping class groups and quadratic symplectic groups

From MaRDI portal

Homological stability for (discrete) groups has a rich history which goes back to Quillen in the early 1970s. Recently, the technology of \textit{cellular \(E_k\)-algebras} [\textit{S. Galatius} et al., Astérisque 460. Paris: Société Mathématique de France. x, 299 p. (2025; Zbl 08117841)] was introduced which allows to improve several previously known results of homological stability, by sharpening stability bounds. In the article under review, the author applies cellular \(E_2\)-algebras to improve the stability bounds from [\textit{O. Randal-Williams}, J. Topol. 7, No. 1, 155--186 (2014; Zbl 1322.55006)] for spin mapping class groups of surfaces. It improves also, by similar methods, the stability bounds for quadratic symplectic groups over the integers (where \textit{quadratic} means here to preserve Arf invariant after reduction mod \(2\)), for which a classical reference (in a more general setting) is [\textit{R. Charney}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 44, 107--125 (1987; Zbl 0615.20024)].\N\NIn both cases, the author proves also secondary homological stability results (that is, stability for the defect of homological stabilisation) with coefficients in \(\mathbb{Z}/2\).\N\NThe last part of the article gives complete homology computations for these groups in low degree, using computer programs.
