Invariant factor assignment under state feedback and output injection

From MaRDI portal

The authors study the following problem: Given a matrix triple \((A,B,C) \in\mathbb{F}^{n\times n}\times \mathbb{F}^{n\times m}\times \mathbb{F}^{p\times n}\), \(\mathbb{F}\) an arbitrary field, and given a sequence of monic polynomials \(\gamma_1, \ldots , \gamma_n\) satisfying the conditions \(\gamma_i|\gamma_{i+1}, 1 \leqslant i \leqslant n-1\) and \(d(\gamma_1) + \ldots + d(\gamma_n) = n\), where the symbol ``\(|\) stands for divisibility and \(d(\cdot)\) for the ``degree of, under what conditions do there exist matrices \(F \in \mathbb{F}^{m\times n}\) and \(K \in \mathbb{F}^{n\times p}\) such that \(A + BF + KC\) has \(\gamma_1, \ldots , \gamma_n\) as invariant factors? \noindent They present a solution of this problem over an arbitrary field. The techniques used provide more insight into the nature of the problem. Namely, they consider the question of characterizing the possible feedback invariants of matrix pairs of the form \((A+KC,B)\) for all possible choices of the output injection matrix \(K\). All proofs are strongly based on the Kronecker canonical form of a singular matrix pencil.
