Let \(G\) be a countable locally compact group. The Baum--Connes conjecture asserts that the K-theory of the reduced group C*-algebra \(C^*_{red}(G)\) is isomorphic to the equivariant K-homology of the universal proper \(G\)-space \(\underline{E}G\), i.e., the assembly map \[ \mu : K^G_*(\underline{E}G) \to K_*(C^*_{red}(G)) \] is an isomorphism. The author constructs a bivariant Chern character for the equivariant KK-theory of a totally disconnected group with values in bivariant equivariant cohomology in the sense of Baum and Schneider. The main result of the paper (Theorem 7.2) is the construction of the bivariant Chern character \[ ch^G_* : KK^G_*(C_0(X),C_0(Y)) \to \bigoplus_{j\in\mathbb Z} H^{*-2j}_G(X,Y) \] from the equivariant KK-theory to the equivariant \(\mathbb Z_2\)-graded Baum--Schneider theory. The author proves the Baum--Connes conjecture for totally disconnected groups.
