The author presents Gelfand's 1959 integral geometry project. The project is to rebuild harmonic analysis (or the representation theory) of semisimple Lie groups on the basis of Radon type integral transforms, and to extend the methods involved to geometric structures that are not necessarily related to groups. Gelfand's starting observation was that for complex semisimple Lie groups and their corresponding Riemannian symmetric manifolds, there is a remarkably useful Radon type integral transform, which is the horospherical transform. In this transform, functions on homogeneous manifolds are integrated along horospheres, i.e. orbits of maximal unipotent subgroups. The paper under review contains some results on the horospherical transform on Riemannian symmetric manifolds of noncompact type and on its inversion, and then on the horospherical transform on Riemannian symmetric manifolds of zero curvature. The author recalls old results and he mentions new developments.
