Limit distributions for the diameter \(D_n\) (i.e., the maximum interpoint distance) are considered for samples of \(n\) i.i.d. points and for a Poisson point process on a ball in \(R^d\). E.g., for the uniformly distributed points \[ {\mathbf P}\{n^{((4/(d+s))}(2-D_n)\} \to 1-\exp\{-(2^d d\Gamma(d/2+1))(\sqrt{\pi}(d+1)(d+3)\Gamma((d+1)/2))^{-1}t^{((d+s)/2)}. \] Some other special cases are spherically symmetric distributions and distributions supported by pointed sets, e.g., by a family of segments.
