In this interesting paper the existence of a 2-dimensional nonaspherical simply connected cell-like compactum is proved. The existence of such spaces was known for dimensions \(n\geq 3\) but the 2-dimensional case was heretofore unknown. The authors show that the space \(SC(S^{1})\) constructed in their paper [Fundam. Math. 195, No.~3, 193--203 (2007; Zbl 1148.54016)], is in fact a 2-dimensional nonaspherical simply connected cell-like Peano continuum. They also modify their original construction of the space \(SC(S^{1})\) to show that the modified construction gives a space which has the homotopy type of the classical space constructed by H.B. Griffiths which is a non-simply connected one-point union of two contractible spaces.
