This paper is a continuation of [Fundam. Math. 195, No. 3, 193--203 (2007; Zbl 1148.54016)] and [Topology Appl. 156, No. 3, 515--521 (2009; Zbl 1221.54040)] in which the Snake cone \(SC\) was introduced and studied. Given a path connected space \(X\) the Snake cone \(SC(X)\) is a simply-connected space. Snake cones were used to prove the existence of a 2-dimensional nonaspherical simply connected cell-like compactum. In this paper the authors introduce a modified construction named the Alternating cone \(AC\). Given a path connected space \(X\), \(AC(X)\) and \(SC(X)\) may not be homotopy equivalent. However, the crucial properties of both spaces are shared and their verification is much easier in the case of \(AC\). These properties include the following: if \(X\) is a Peano continuum then \(AC(X)\) is a cell-like Peano continuum; \(AC\) raises dimension by one; \(\pi_1(X)\) is trivial if and only if \(\pi_2(AC(X))\) is trivial.
