The only known example of generalized hexagons of order \((3,3)\) is the so-called split Cayley hexagon of order 3. In this paper it is shown that if a generalized hexagon of order 3 contains a subhexagon of order \((1,3)\) then it is isomorphic to the split Cayley hexagon of order 3.
